Gerês, in the municipality of Terras de Bouro, has always symbolized harmony between Man and Nature, in a permanent sharing of activities and feelings, of people allied with Nature in the inhospitable granite mountains shaped by time. Crystal clear waters flow through the streams and the pure air envelops the great diversity of fauna and flora, providing a continuous movement of calm and pleasure.

An important tourist destination for over a century, Gerês is a brand to be defended, preserved, and legitimately exploited for the sustainability of the region. Gerês offers high-quality products and services designed to provide the well-being that is so necessary in today’s hectic life.

The Peneda-Gerês National Park is of undeniable value. It was the first protected area to be created in Portugal (1971), by Decree-Law No. 187/71 of May 8, and is the only one with National Park status. It is located in the northern region of Portugal, sharing a border with Galicia, which forms a continuous landscape with the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park, in the municipality of Lóbios, in Spain. The two parks mentioned above constitute the Gerês-Xurés Cross-Border Park. In addition to the areas influenced by the Minho, Lima, Cávado, and Homem rivers, the PNPG is part of the Peneda, Amarela, and Gerês granite massifs. It covers an area of 69,693 hectares, encompassing five municipalities: Arcos de Valdevez, Melgaço, Montalegre, Ponte da Barca, and Terras de Bouro.

The latter occupies 55.7% of the total municipal area.

The region is predominantly granitic and mountainous, with altitudes reaching 1,545 m at Pico da Nevosa, in Terras de Bouro. Part of the mountain ranges that make up the region have been continuously altered by human activity since Neolithic times.

In the municipality of Terras de Bouro, the “heart” of the PNPG, we suggest visiting places such as Albufeira da Caniçada, Marina de Rio Caldo, S. Bento da Porta Aberta, Aldeia de Covide, Aldeia de Campo do Gerês, Núcleo Museológico de Campo do Gerês, Miradouro da Junceda, Miradouro da Boneca, Albufeira de Vilarinho das Furnas, Aldeia de Brufe, Mata de Albergaria, Portela do Homem, Miradouro da Pedra Bela, Aldeia da Ermida, Cascata do Arado, Feha de Barjas (Cascata do Taiti), Vila do Gerês, Parque Tude de Sousa, and Aldeia de Santa Isabel do Monte.
